Safe Superintelligence (SSI), co-founded by former OpenAI chief scientist Ilya Sutskever, has secured an impressive $1 billion in funding to develop safe AI systems that surpass human capabilities. The startup, valued at an estimated $5 billion, aims to use the funds to acquire top talent and computing power to further its mission of creating advanced AI while prioritizing safety.
Ilya Sutskever, a highly influential figure in the AI industry, established SSI in June 2024 alongside Daniel Gross, former head of AI initiatives at Apple, and Daniel Levy, a former OpenAI researcher. The company currently operates with a lean team of 10 employees split between Palo Alto, California, and Tel Aviv, Israel.
The substantial investment in SSI comes from prominent venture capital firms, including Andreessen Horowitz, Sequoia Capital, DST Global, and SV Angel. This funding round demonstrates continued confidence in exceptional AI talent, despite a general decline in investments for foundational AI research.
SSI's focus on AI safety aims to address growing concerns about the potential risks posed by advanced AI systems. The company seeks to develop AI that aligns with human values and avoids causing harm or acting against humanity's interests.
Sutskever's decision to launch SSI follows a turbulent period at OpenAI, where he initially supported the attempted ousting of CEO Sam Altman before reversing his stance. After leaving OpenAI in May 2024, Ilya Sutskever's “Superalignment” team, dedicated to ensuring AI alignment with human values, was disbanded.
As an early advocate of the “scaling hypothesis,” which posits that AI models improve with vast amounts of computing power, Sutskever has indicated that SSI will approach scaling differently than his former employer. Emphasizing the importance of innovation in AI development, he stated,
Everyone just says scaling hypothesis. Everyone neglects to ask, what are we scaling?
SSI's focus on hiring individuals who fit its culture and possess extraordinary capabilities, rather than solely relying on credentials and experience, underscores the company's commitment to building a trusted and dedicated team. As the startup embarks on its mission to develop safe and highly capable AI systems, the world eagerly awaits the groundbreaking advancements that may emerge from this well-funded venture.
