In a significant leap forward for humanoid robotics, Israel-based startup Mentee Robotics has unveiled its highly anticipated artificial intelligence (AI) enabled robot, Menteebot. After two years of research and development under stealth mode, the company has showcased a prototype that integrates AI across all operational layers, setting a new benchmark in the field.
Founded in 2022 by a team of world-renowned experts, including Prof. Amnon Shashua, Prof. Lior Wolf, and Prof. Shai Shalev-Shwartz, Mentee Robotics aims to create a general-purpose bipedal robot capable of performing a wide range of tasks in both household and industrial settings. The company has raised $17 million from investors such as Ahren Innovation Capital to bring their vision to life.
What sets Menteebot apart is its advanced AI capabilities that enable it to understand and respond to natural language commands, learn new tasks through imitation, and navigate complex environments autonomously. By leveraging cutting-edge technologies like computer vision, natural language processing, and machine learning, Menteebot can engage in dynamic interactions with the real world.
The robot's locomotion is based on a novel Simulator to Reality (Sim2Real) machine learning approach, which allows it to learn in a simulated environment and adapt to the real world with minimal data requirements. This enables Menteebot to maintain balance and perform precise movements while carrying weights or reaching out with its hands.
For mapping its surroundings, Menteebot employs state-of-the-art NeRF-based algorithms to create cognitive 3D maps on the fly. These maps store semantic information, allowing the robot to locate objects and plan efficient paths while avoiding obstacles. The robot can also engage in conversations using natural language understanding powered by transformer-based large language models.
Menteebot's dexterity is truly remarkable, with videos demonstrating its ability to delicately handle objects like dinnerware. Its potential applications span across settings, from performing household chores like table setting, cleaning, and laundry handling to industrial tasks such as lifting and transporting items weighing up to 25 kilograms in warehouses.
“We are on the cusp of a convergence of computer vision, natural language understanding, strong and detailed simulators, and methodologies on and for transferring from simulation to the real world,” said Prof. Amnon Shashua, chairman of Mentee Robotics. “At Mentee Robotics, we see this convergence as the starting point for designing the future general-purpose bipedal robot that can move everywhere with the brains to perform tasks and learn through imitation.”
The company plans to release a production-ready version of Menteebot by the first quarter of 2025. The final product will feature camera-only sensing, proprietary electric motors for advanced dexterity, and fully integrated AI that enables complex reasoning, conversation, and on-the-fly learning.
As the race to develop sophisticated humanoid robots heats up, with players like Tesla, Xiaomi, and Boston Dynamics making strides, Menteebot's debut marks a significant milestone. By focusing on AI-first design and advanced training techniques, Mentee Robotics is poised to revolutionize how we interact with and utilize robots in our daily lives and industries.
With its unparalleled combination of agility, dexterity, and AI prowess, Menteebot is set to become a game-changer in the world of robotics. As the technology continues to evolve, we can expect to see more innovative applications and collaborations between humans and their robotic counterparts in the near future.
