Apple Vision Pro Goes Global: Launching in 9 New Countries

Apple Vision Pro goes Global

Apple Inc. is set to expand the availability of its highly anticipated mixed reality headset, the Apple Vision Pro, to international markets. This announcement was made by Apple CEO Tim Cook at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2024, marking a significant milestone for the tech giant as it ventures beyond the US with its latest innovation in spatial computing.

The Apple Vision Pro will first be available in China, Japan, and Singapore starting June 28, 2024. Pre-orders for these regions will commence on June 14, 2024. Following this initial rollout, the headset will be available in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, and the UK starting July 12, 2024, with pre-orders beginning on June 28, 2024.

The Vision Pro will be available in three storage variants: 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB. In China, the pricing is set at RMB 29,999 ($4,135) for the 256GB version, RMB 31,499 ($4,342) for the 512GB version, and RMB 32,999 ($4,549) for the 1TB version. Optical inserts, which are necessary for users with vision correction needs, will be sold separately starting at RMB 799 ($110).

Apple Vision Pro Technical Specifications

The Apple Vision Pro boasts impressive technical specifications, including:

23 million pixels across its dual micro-OLED displays, providing more than 4K resolution per eye.
Apple M2 chip for advanced graphics and running the VisionOS system.
Apple R1 chip designed to process input from cameras, sensors, and microphones with a 12-millisecond latency.
Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking and personalized audio.
Stereoscopic 3D main camera system for spatial photo and video capture.
Eye-tracking cameras and TrueDepth camera for precise user interaction.

New Features with VisionOS 2

Alongside the international launch, Apple introduced visionOS 2, the latest update to the Vision Pro's operating system. This update includes several new features:

  • 3D Memories: Transform photos into immersive 3D experiences.
  • Intuitive Hand Gestures: Enhanced control for Home View and other applications.
  • Mac Virtual Display: Improved integration with Mac devices.
  • Travel Mode: Optimized performance for use on the go.
  • Guest User Capabilities: Allowing multiple users to share the device.
  • Enhanced Apps: Updates to Mindfulness, Safari, and the Apple TV app.

The Apple Vision Pro's initial launch in the US saw mixed reviews. While praised for its advanced technology and immersive experiences, the headset faced criticism for its high price point and comfort issues. The $3,499 starting price has been a significant barrier for many consumers, and reports indicate that Apple has reduced production due to lower-than-expected demand.

Despite these challenges, Apple remains optimistic about the Vision Pro's potential in international markets. CEO Tim Cook expressed enthusiasm about bringing the "magic of spatial computing" to more customers worldwide, highlighting the device's capabilities in enhancing productivity, entertainment, and communication.

In preparation for the international rollout, Apple has conducted extensive training sessions for its global workforce. Hundreds of employees from Apple stores in Germany, France, Australia, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, and China were flown to Cupertino, California, for hands-on training on how to demo the Vision Pro. These sessions, lasting up to four days, are designed to ensure that Apple staff are well-equipped to assist customers and provide comprehensive demonstrations of the device.

The expansion into international markets is a strategic move for Apple, aiming to boost sales and broaden the Vision Pro's user base. Markets like China and Japan, where virtual reality technology is more widely accepted, could offer promising prospects for the Apple Vision Pro. However, the high price point and niche appeal of the device may still pose challenges in achieving widespread adoption.

Looking ahead, Apple is reportedly working on a more affordable version of the Vision Pro, which could help increase its appeal to a broader audience. Additionally, the company is expected to continue refining the device's design and functionality based on user feedback and market trends.
